that vice president biden will spearhead his administration's response to the newtown shooting. the president is not expected to go into detail on policy decisions. the national rifle association has broken it's silence issuing a statement that reads in part this. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. that's significant. >> can i stop for a second there? if progressives, if moderates, if conservatives that are concerned about these magazine clips and assault weapons, if they want to feel self-righteous and scream and yell, they can do it and we won't get a deal. this is like the fiscal cliff. in the end it's like in "lincoln" with the 13th amendment. if the nra comes out and says something like that, instead of everybody going, now that blood's on your hands, you know what? guess what? feel self-righteous. you can save lives, or you can feel self-righteous. beat your chest like jim and tammy faye bakker if that's how you sleep at night. if that gets you through the night, go ahead. i tell you what, the art of politics,

of the newtown school shooting. there was a stirring scene last night. the word hope, spelled out with candles, outside the wake of sandy hook elementary principal dawn hochsprung. and there was this. hundreds of firefighters standing at attention at the funeral of 7-year-old daniel barden, who wanted to be one of them when he grew up. today, vice president joe biden will begin meeting with law enforcement officials to discuss how to prevent another tragedy like newtown. we're going to have more on those talks coming up in just a moment. >>> and new concerns about marijuana and prescription drug use among teens this morning. a new survey finds 23% of high school seniors now admit smoking pot in the last month alone. 7% say they smoke it every day. and 1 in 12 teens now admits to using the stimulant adderall, which treats attention deficit disorder. a significant increase from just three years ago. >>> and finally, a $500 million mystery this morning after a whole lot more than a prayer was left at jerusalem's holiest of sites. a visitor at the famed western wall found an envelope, you guys. it

, no one plan of action, that everyone agrees, we don't want a repeat of what happened in newtown, connecticut. or milwaukee, wisconsin. or aurora, colorado. and those are just three from this past year. there are others since january, and, of course, many before that. so what? we just brace for the next one, the next time? where will that be? will it be minneapolis? new orleans, will it be your city? we're angry, we're hurt, we're frustrated, but i think most of us believe what the president said at the memorial for the teachers and babies as the massacre in newtown, connecticut. >> we can't tolerate this anymore. these tragedies must end. and to end them, we must change. we will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. no single law, no set of laws, can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. but that can't be an excuse for inaction. surely, we can do better than this. >> so tonight, we want to do better. let's look for better. and let's start with two men who know all about guns. lou palombo, a form

of glocks, better than a nation where newtown is the norm. gary wills says america treats guns like a secular god. e.j.dion says depose the false diety. i say amen. we owe it to those 20 newtown babies. that does it for "the cycle." we're on break next week. michael eric dyson is now in for martin. michael eric dyson, what you got to say? >> i say that which you promote is just wonderful. >> happy holidays. >> happy holidays to all of you. thanks, guys, and good afternoon. i'm professor michael eric dyson in for martin bashir on this very busy friday, december the 21st. today speaker boehner lost his way. the president chose his man. and the nra, well, the nra turned tragedy into an opportunity of the worst kind. >> nra has blood on its hands. >> the media demonized lawful gun owners. vicious, violent video games. we have blood-soaked films out there, a thousand music videos, the media. the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. politicians have no business and no authority denying us the right, the ability, and the moral imperative to protect ourselves

. is in newtown with the latest. >> tragedy in a small connecticut community. "evil visited this community today" >> police say a shooter struck sandy hook elementry school in newtown friday morning. >> "there were 18 children pronounced dead at the hospital. six adults scene" >> a parent inside the school at the time said she believed at least 100 rounds had been fired. the alleged shooter is dead and police have recoveredthe first 9-1-1 call came in around 930 am, police shooter search. >> "there were police with rifles and handguns, they were on the roof, they were surrounding the school, they were going in through the roof." "our main objective was to evacuate as quickly and efficiently and as possible school." >> president obama ordered u-s flags to half-staff in honor of the victims. speaking about the children killed, he fought back tears. >> "they had their entire lives ahead of them, birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own." >> he also offered assistance, and condolences, to connecticut's governor, during a difficult time. >> "we'll do whatever we can to overcome this event.

the road came newtown, connecticut. 20 children dead. all 6 and 7-year-olds. six staff members of sandy hook elementary school dead. the alleged gunman's mother also dead. but for anybody waiting for that initial nra statement that seems to come every time something like this happens the immediate statement about their sadness for the tragedy and then a statement a couple days later about how this isn't the time to talk about policy, it did not happen that way this time. they're breaking pattern. this time the nra went completely dark online for several days. various nra news personalities, they sponsor like news shows that's just talk radio that's pro nra. they spouted their beliefs about gun control. but nobody paid attention to that. in terms of an official statement from the group, the nra as an organization did not put out a statement of any kind until four days after the newtown attack. and at first it seemed to follow the nra pattern. they're just going to express their sadness, right? and say this isn't the time that talk about policy. but this statement actually was different.

their lives in the sandy hook elementary school shootings in newtown, connecticut. to the best vacation spot on earth. saw in newtown. those kinds of tragedies. as i said before we see tragedies every single night in this country on the streets of this city and d.c. and chicago and l.a. and other -- >> can you give me a perspective on how powerful the nra really is in the republican party because we had michael bloomberg, mayor of new york city, on "meet the press" last week. he said they are not that powerful. it is -- they are just -- ed rendell, former governor of pennsylvania. he got elected three times and said they are a piper tiger. >> i agree with the mayor. i said this for a very long time. the myth of the power of the nra is much greater than the actual power of the nra. you have to remember in -- talking about grover norquist and pledge or nra and -- their views, and -- you know, there are a lot of members of congress who are ideologically lined with the views of the organization. less about what the nra can do to them than they agree on most issues. they are getting that support. but if you go out and speak clearly to your constituents about what your views are on the issues and --

's visited tucson, aurora, and oak creek and newtown, and communities from columbine to blacksberg before that, then surely we have an obligation to try. >> rose: joining me now is michael bloomberg. he's the mayor of new york city and he's also the co-chair of mayors against illegal guns. he's long been an outspoken advocate of gun control. he is now call on the nation's lawmakers to make reducing gun violence their top priority. here's what he said elier today at a city hall press conference. >> if the massacre in tucson wasn't enough to make our national leaders act, and if the more recent bloodshed in aurora, colorado, and oak creaks wisconsin, and portland oregon and other cities and towns wasn't enough, perhaps the slaughter of innocence at sandy hook elementary school will at long last be enough. millions of americans hope that is true. but it's not enough for us to hope. we have to speak up. we have made our voices heard and hold washington accountable for facing up to the epidemic of gun violence in our country. if this moment passes in to memory without action from washington, i
